'Drivemeawayyourtroubledheart-Instagram'

This is an artist I found on instagram and they tackle foliage in a really interesting manner. The linework is very delicate and the colours are applied in a very simple manner. They make really wonderful backgrounds that are both interesting and not scene stealing. Ideally I would be able to achieve something similar with my backgrounds.

Studio Ghibli (Princess Mononoke)

These forest imagery backgrounds are from the Ghibli movie Princess Mononoke, they are beautifully rendered. Obviously they have way more detail than I would put into a background for the graphic novel but the composition and colour are something that can inform my work.

One thing that I find interesting about how backgrounds work in animation is that often the background can appear to be a completely different style to the characters in the foreground (as above) but they still work and compliment each other well. I am going to do some tests in the near future where I have my characters drawn slightly different to the backgrounds and see how this affects the scene as a whole. I feel like this could mean the characters stand out more but it could also look incongruous as I have not attempted to meld styles in such a way.
